Another first

Today at work, I was asked this question by my boss:

"TeacherRefPoet, hypothetically, if it came up, would you [insert hellish job that will eat a lot of my time and emotional energies over the next few months for almost no financial remuneration]?"

The response was out before I realized what a big barrier had been crossed:

"I'll have to talk it over with Swankette before making that commitment."

Whoa! Running it by the little Mrs.! Cool!

The "running it by the missus" excuse is one of the best reasons to get married, IMHO.

Ok, not the best reason, but you know what I mean. Now you do, anyway.

OK, this is kinda a tangent.

When I moved cross-country to live with my g.f., I decided that I was specifically looking to work for an orgainization where I could be comfortable out. I outted myself in my interviews. It was really easy, at every interview I was asked why I moved to Boston, and my answer was, "I followed my partner here. She's going to graduate school at Lesley." So, I guess that got me into "partner speak" (or couple speak) really quicky.

Years later, I was talking to a collegue about being out and mentioned that I had outted myself when I interviewed. Syrl (the boss who hired me) said "You did?" When I recounted the dialog she replied, "Oh, I guess you did." It's just always been a complete non-issue to her, although she does get how it can be an issue to me.

The tricky bit about checking with the partner, is when you come to a little decission that you think your partner will have no interest or issue about and go ahead and make it, to find out later that she did want to be consulted. And it will seem so small that you won't see it coming. Somehow, planning a wedding amplifies these.
